Driving Directions
From New York City and New Jersey
Take the NY State Thruway (I-87) north to Exit 24 (Albany). Take I-87 north (Adirondack Northway) to Exit 30. Turn left onto Route 9 north and follow it for two miles to Route 73. Continue left on Route 73 for 28 miles into Lake Placid. At first light turn left onto Route 86. Follow approximately 2 miles to Swiss Acres Inn (on left). Drive times: From NYC - 5 hours, from Albany - 2 and 1/2 hours.
From Ottawa
Take routes south to the Cornwall Bridge. Pick up Route 37 east to Malone. Follow Route 30 south to Paul Smiths. Turn left on Route 86. Continue through Saranac Lake to Lake Placid. Swiss Acres Inn is on your right as you enter Lake Placid just past the "Lake Placid Outpost" shopping complex you see as you enter town. Drive time: 3 hours.
From Montreal
Take Route 15 south to Champlain Crossing, connecting with I-87 south. Take Exit 34 west, following Route 9N 17 miles through the towns of Clintonville, Au Sable Forks, and Upper Jay. There, turn right onto Route 86 continuing an additional 17 miles through Wilmington to Lake Placid. Once in the Olympic Village, continue approximately 2 miles through downtown to Swiss Acres Inn (on left). Drive time: 2 hours.
From Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Points West
Take I-90 (NY State Thruway) east to Exit 36 (Syracuse). Pick up I-81 north to Watertown. Take Route 3 and follow it east to Saranac Lake. Take Route 86 east from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid. Swiss Acres Inn is on your right as you enter Lake Placid just past the "Lake Placid Outpost" shopping complex you see as you enter town. Drive times: from Buffalo - 5 and 1/2 hours, from Rochester - 4 and 1/2 hours, from Syracuse - 3 and 1/2 hours.
From Boston, Springfield, Hartford
Take Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) to Albany. Pick up I-787 north to Cohoes. Connect with Route 7 west to I-87 north. Follow I-87 (Northway) to Exit 30. Turn left onto Route 9 north and follow it for two miles to Route 73. Continue left on Route 73 for 28 miles into Lake Placid. At first light turn left onto Route 86. Follow approximately 2 miles to Swiss Acres Inn (on left). Drive time from Boston: 5 hours.
From Toronto
Take 401 east to Cornwall Bridge. Pick up Route 37 east to Malone. Follow Route 30 south to Paul Smiths and turn left on Route 86. Continue on 86 through Saranac Lake to Lake Placid. Swiss Acres Inn is on your right as you enter Lake Placid just past the "Lake Placid Outpost" shopping complex you see as you enter town. Drive time: 6 and 1/2 hours.
Ferry Options Across Lake Champlain --
Burlington, VT to Port Kent, NY: Trips run May 19 to Mid-October. Crossing time is about an hour.
Grand Isle, VT to Plattsburgh, NY: Trips run year-round. Crossing time is about 12 minutes.
Charlotte, VT to Essex, NY: Trips run year-round. Crossing time is about 20 minutes.
Shoreham, VT to Ticonderoga, NY: Trips run May 1 to Last Sunday in Oct. Crossing time is about six minutes.
Via Air -- The Lake Placid Municipal Airport is a mile south of the village on Route 73. Hours of operation: 9 am- 5 pm daily. 8 am - 8 pm in July & August. Runway: 4,200 feet.
Many commercial flights are available to nearby Saranac lake from airports around the northeast.
The Lake Placid is a 2 1/2 hour drive from three major airports: Albany, New York; Burlington, Vermont; and Montreal, Quebec in Canada. All are serviced by major airline carriers and have car rentals available.
Via Train -- Amtrak operates between New York City and Montreal with a local stop in Westport, N.Y. (40 miles from Lake Placid). For information call 1-800-888-8478. Shuttle bus service to Lake Placid must be arranged with a reservation: 518-523-4431.
